Have you ever had a song get stuck in your head?  A song that you can’t seem to get rid of.  Well, you are not alone.

Music therapists and psychologists have studied this phenomenon.  They have come to believe that earworms occur when a song gets stuck in our heads, and we replay it over and over again in our minds.

Interestingly, studies have shown that people report hearing the song more often in moments of stress or sadness.

Other experts suggest that earworms are caused by tiny musical cues that get stuck in our heads.  For example, when we hear a song on the radio, we encode the song with lyrics and melody.

This encoding process causes the song to be memorable, but it also means our brains are likely to hear it again.

So, how do you get rid of an earworm?

Some researchers suggest changing up the tempo or singing a chorus in your head.

Another tip is to play the song in reverse.

Finally, some psychologists suggest creating a “de-worming” ritual.

For example, you could sing a different song in your head, or hum a tune.

The important thing is to treat the earworm as if it is a normal part of memory.
