How to Write a Poem

There is no one way to write a poem, but there are some common ways that people approach writing poems.  If you're not sure where to start, try one of these methods:

Pick a topic or subject that you're passionate about, and start brainstorming ideas and words related to it.

Write down a list of random words, phrases, or images, and see if any combination jumps out at you as being particularly evocative or interesting.

Start with a line or phrase from another poem that you like, and use it as a jumping-off point for your poem.

Experiment with different poetic forms until you find one that feels natural for the topic or subject you want to write about.

Once you have some ideas for your poem, it's time to start putting them down on paper (or screen). Again, there is no one right way to do this – just start writing whatever comes into your head.  Don't worry about making mistakes or getting the words perfect – just let the poem flow out of you.  Once you're done, you can go back and revise it as much as you like.
