How to Open a Coconut

The first thing you need to do is find a young, green coconut.  You can usually find them at your local grocery store or farmer’s market.  Once you have your coconut, you need to crack it open.  The easiest way to do this is to use a sharp knife and tap it all the way around the middle of the coconut.  Once you've gone all the way around, twist the two halves of the coconut apart.

Now that you have your coconut open, you need to remove the water inside.  You can do this by either pouring it out or scooping it out with a spoon.  Be careful not to spill the water, as it can be quite slippery.

Once you've removed the water, you need to remove the meat from the shell.  The best way to do this is to use a spoon or your fingers to pry it out.  You can also use a knife, but be careful not to cut yourself.

And that's it.  You now have a delicious coconut that you can eat on its own or use in a recipe.  Enjoy!
